Italian authorities have banned concerts by Kanye West and Travis Scott in the northern city of Reggio Emilia, citing public order and security concerns. The decision came after a petition from the local Jewish community to cancel West’s performance. Community leader Nicoletta Uzzielli called on local officials to replace the show “to bring music back to the fore as a unifying universal force.”According to reports, prefect Salvatore Angieri announced on Friday that the two events scheduled for July 17 and 18 at the city’s RFC Arena would not take place.
Why Italy banned Kanye West and Travis Scott concerts
The regional prefecture said in a statement that several factors influenced its decision, including “the cancellation of previous concerts by American rappers in other countries and the real risk of counter-demonstrations”. The proximity of the two events and the large crowds they would attract were cited as other factors.West, now known as Ye, was due to perform alongside Scott and other artists including The Chainsmokers, Rita Ora and Swedish House Mafia. He has sparked widespread outrage for a series of anti-Semitic, racist and pro-Nazi comments, and was recently banned from entering the UK.Scott, meanwhile, has come under scrutiny since 10 people aged nine to 27 lost their lives at the Astroworld festival in Houston, Texas in 2021, when panic broke out as an overcapacity crowd pressed towards the front of the stage during his performance.
A series of Kanye West cancellations in Europe
Italy’s ban is the latest to be lifted across Western Europe. London’s summer Wireless Festival was canceled last month after West, billed as its headline act, was refused entry to the UK due to his previous statements.West announced on April 15 that the Marseille leg of his tour had been postponed “until further notice,” and French media reported that authorities sought to ban the June 11 concert. His June 19 concert at the Silesian Stadium in Chorzow, Poland was also canceled for “formal and legal reasons,” according to the venue.
Kanye West’s antisemitic remarks and his forgiveness
In 2022, West posted on social media that he would “death to 3 Jewish people”. In May last year, he released a song called ‘Heil Hitler’ and sold t-shirts with swastikas on them.Since then, the rapper has sought to return to mainstream public life after publishing a lengthy apology in the Wall Street Journal in January. “I am not a Nazi or anti-Semitic,” he wrote. “I love the Jews.” He also attributed some of his behavior to his bipolar disorder, saying he had “lost touch with reality” as a result of the condition.Despite the apology, authorities across Europe have continued to crack down on planned performances, with Italy’s ban being the latest example of institutional backlash against a return to the stage.
