New Delhi: Carlos Alcaraz will miss Wimbledon this year after failing to fully recover from a wrist injury, ending his hopes of another title run at the All England Club. The Spanish star confirmed he is also pulling out of the Queen’s tournament as he continues to rehabilitate after sustaining an injury during last month’s Barcelona Open.“My recovery is going well and I’m feeling a lot better but unfortunately I’m still not ready to play, I’m forced to withdraw from both Queen’s and Wimbledon,” Alcaraz said. The 23-year-old added, “These two are really special tournaments for me and I will miss them a lot. We will keep working to get back as soon as possible.”Alcaraz has not played since April after being knocked out of tournaments in Madrid, Rome and Roland Garros. The world No. 2 was enjoying another strong season, winning the Australian Open earlier this year to complete the youngest career Grand Slam. He also claimed the title in Doha and had a 22-3 record before being injured that season.Last month, Alcaraz already hinted that he would not rush his return. “I’ll probably come back a bit later, but in much better shape, rather than risk coming back early and making this injury worse,” he explained.“I have a long career ahead of me, so I’m not afraid to recover better than what I have to lose.”Alcaraz’s absence is a big boost for Janek Sner, who is now considered the favorite for both the French Open and Wimbledon titles. The growing rivalry between the two young stars has become one of tennis’ biggest attractions.“It’s sad news for all of us, as a competitor you want to play against the best players in the world and he’s definitely the best at this level,” Sinner said after hearing the news.
