Speaking on JioHotstar’s ‘Commentary With Champions’, Ashwin revealed that Chahal often claimed that he was a strong batsman and even wanted to open the innings. IPL MatchesAshwin said that Chahal had once told him that he had scored a century during his U-19 days and that he was confident that he could handle pressure situations with the bat. However, Ashwin jokingly questioned whether Chahal had the strength to hit the big shots.
“Chahal once told me that he used to bat in his Under-19 days and claimed to score a century even then. He said that in a high-pressure situation, if the team needed someone to step up, they sent him in. But honestly, my question is simple, ‘Where will Chahal get the power to clear the boundary?'” he said.Ashwin also recalled how Chahal regularly asked the Rajasthan Royals management to let him open the batting. Since Ashwin himself was sometimes promoted on order, Chahal would jokingly ask him to remove his pads so that he could go instead.“We spent three seasons together at Rajasthan Royals. I’ve seen wherever he goes, he keeps asking to open the batting. I remember putting the pads up because RR would send me an order. But Chahal would get up and ask me to take the pads off because he wanted to go out to bat instead,” Ashwin said.He also joked about Chahal facing fast bowlers like Kagiso Rabada and Mohammad Siraj and said, “More importantly, he can hurt himself against that kind of pace.”
