On April 14, Cruise and Iñárritu premiered the first footage of the upcoming dark comedy at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. According to Variety, before unveiling the new trailer, Cruise said, “It took me 40 years to step into Digger Rockwell’s boots.”

In the dark comedy, the ‘Mission: Impossible’ star appeared with gray hair, a big belly and a southern accent. In the teaser footage, Cruise walks around his mansion and tends to his sick cat. It soon becomes clear that Digger is a billionaire executive of a large corporation wreaking environmental havoc with a methane leak that is threatening to displace millions of people.
The idea of ’Digger’ has been around for nine years
As the ‘Digger’ director Iñárritu explained, he first had the idea of Digger nine years ago, and he has been talking about it with Cruise for the last seven years. “Watching Tom Cruise become Digger Rockwell, I wasn’t prepared for it,” the filmmaker continued, adding that he wasn’t afraid of his own stunts, but “embodying this character, this is a different type of fearless … this role might be his most challenging and high-wire act yet.”

Cruise spoke about his collaboration with Iñárritu in exchange, saying that it was “the kind of movie I wanted to make movies for.” He added, “the movie is wild, it’s fun, and I can’t wait for you all to see it.”The film also stars Sandra Huller, Jesse Plemons, John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde and Emma D’Arcy.
