Amid much fanfare and social media buzz, ‘Varanasi’ filmmaker SS Rajamouli and producer SS Karthikeya made their much-anticipated appearances at CCXP Mexico 2026.

Reveals SS Rajamouli Baahubali Connection to Mexico

Rajamouli, through a video message, greeted his fans and the audience in Mexico at the event, where he not only talked about the upcoming time travel film, but also touched on blockbusters like ‘Baahubali’ and ‘RRR’. In the video message shared online, the director admitted that elements of his film ‘Baahubali’ were inspired by the ancient Mayan civilization. He said, “In my previous film #Baahubali, the center of the city and the throne were inspired by the famous pyramid of Chichen Itza.” And he added: “But I have to admit that my knowledge of Mexican history, heritage and culture is very little. But now, I hope this will help me learn more and more about the wonderful people.”

SS Rajamouli on the global impact of ‘RRR’

The director also reflected on the global impact of his films, particularly RRR, which was widely acclaimed internationally. Talking about his journey, he said, “I’ve been making films for about 25 years, but nothing prepares you for realizing that your story has crossed oceans. People, thousands of miles away, are laughing, crying and dancing to something you’ve created. That’s what RRR did for me. Not just my country, India, the whole world showed me that emotion is universal and danceable. All over the world, I thought, ‘Yes! That’s the exact reason for making films’.”

Producer SS Karthikeya addresses the audience

In an interaction at the event, producer SS Karthikeya was asked if the film ‘Varanasi’ could resonate with Mexican and Latin American audiences because of the shared cultural themes of ancestor worship. Responding to the question, Karthikeya pointed out the parallels saying, “That is the hope. There are some similarities. Many movies, comics and series that come out of Mexico come from the history of the Aztec or Mayan civilization, and so do we in India.Reportedly, ‘Varanasi’ will be sharing a special BTS video with fans at the event.

‘Varanasi’ production update

Meanwhile, in the latest update from the sets, the lead stars of the film, Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra, are said to have finished shooting a song sequence. Rumors are rife that the cast will soon head to Antarctica to shoot the next installment of the schedule, while other reports suggest that the team will shoot some important underwater scenes at a studio in India.
