Film maker Reema Kagti Recently, he explained that people called it nepotism, but at the same time he denounced the tendency of the audience to watch movies with popular actors. While promoting ‘Shape of Momo’, the director shared his opinion on how everyone who is making original content needs support and not support.
Reema Kagti on people’s ‘help’
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Reema Kagti admitted that one of the reasons she decided to go for ‘Shape of Momo’ is because it tells the story of the people of the Northeast through an original lens. She said: “Being from the North East, it’s refreshing to know that good things come out of it. It’s an area that’s misrepresented and under-represented, and you rarely see accents, faces, features and cultural habits that are so familiar to me but unknown in popular culture. I was sold on the idea.”Reema, who has directed acclaimed films like ‘Talaash’ and ‘Superboys of Malegaon’, argued that Indian filmmakers are making good cinema, but the audience needs to recognize that too. He said, “I hear a lot of people complaining, ‘Why don’t we make these movies?’ But then, when you ask them what was the last film you contributed to, it was 20 years ago.’In the same interview, Reema added that she also has a problem with the word ‘help’. He said, “When I did ‘Superboys of Malegaon’, a lot of people said, ‘Why don’t people come and support me?’ But I don’t need your help. I need your protection. There is a big difference between the two. Throughout history, art has always survived through patronage. And that comes from people who love it, appreciate it and see its beauty. This is a wake-up call for viewers, journalists and anyone who is creating something original.’
Reema Kagti shares her views on nepotism
According to the filmmaker, both the filmmakers and the audience need to think about how to change things. He said: “There needs to be some soul-searching on both sides. For example, there’s so much anger about nepotism. But at the same time, you’re going to see movies by two famous people over two movies by unknown people. So you have to question yourself.”
