Producers lead a very tough life in the film industry, and Kotapadi J. Rajesh (KJR) recently revealed the staggering amount of money he has lost in recent years. The producer, who will be making his debut in Angikaaram, has revealed that he currently has losses of around ₹120 crore. Explaining how he ended up in such financial distress after investing in several high-profile projects, Rajesh candidly explained the series of blows his production house faced.
How Kotapadi J Rajesh’s planned recovery strategy took another turn
Discussing the matter in an interview with Galatta Plus, Kotapadi J. Rajesh stated, “Heroia, Doctora and Ayalaan were not my production projects originally. They were from 24 AM Studios, and I took them on when they faced financial problems. Sivakarthikeyan and I had a good relationship, and I thought we could make some films together to make up for the losses. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned, and I got stuck in the process.”He further added, “I entered the deal with an existing debt of 90 million. We planned to clear it through various projects before 2020. But today, after everything that has happened, I am sitting with a loss of 120 million.” His candid admission has become a major talking point within the film industry.
When strong content failed to deliver the expected results for KJR
Talking about Hero’s performance, Rajesh admitted that the film failed to connect with the audience despite its strong content. “Hero was a big flop, even though it was a good story. At that time, people weren’t ready to accept such films. Some people thought it was similar to Gentleman, and many viewers didn’t like that Sivakarthikeyan’s character didn’t fight in the film,” he explained.Rajesh also spoke about the upcoming sci-fi film ‘Ayalaan’, noting that the film’s long delays added a lot of financial pressure. According to him, he and Sivakarthikeyan needed to make up for their previous losses by collaborating on future projects. However, rapidly accumulating interest and mounting debts made the situation much more difficult than anticipated.
COVID-19 delays compounded Rajesh’s financial woes
Rajesh explained that the coronavirus pandemic was the reason they suffered huge financial losses. “For ‘Hero’ alone, the refund was around 30 million. Then came the coronavirus that affected ‘Doctor’ and ‘Ayala’. Everything was delayed for about three years. By the time work resumed, the interest had increased significantly,” he said.Despite his banking background, Rajesh admitted that he had underestimated the scale of the financial risks. He also reported that Sivakarthikeyan’s loss is around 55 crores. Although there are two more pending projects between the two, KJ Rajesh said that he is not sure whether these films will finally take shape or not. His honest remarks have helped highlight the financial truths that are often hidden behind the glamor associated with the film industry.
