The National Highways Authority of India has issued a warning for motorists using barrier-free toll roads. Manoharpur in Rajasthan and Hyderabad in Telangana are among the top places in India to go live with seamless tolling on national highways. This new system allows vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping. Under the new system, the cost of missing a toll payment can be doubled if it is not cleared within a specified time.

Problems arise when tolls are not paid. This can be due to FASTag balance, inactive tags, or detection issues. In such cases, the system still records the passage of the vehicle and generates an electronic notice, commonly called an e-notice. It is sent to the vehicle owner based on the registration details and serves as a reminder to clear the pending toll.The key rule to remember is the 72-hour window. If the pending toll is paid within 72 hours of receiving the e-notice, the customer pays only the principal amount. However, if the deadline is missed, the amount payable is automatically doubled. Simply put, delaying beyond this window means paying double the toll.To check and settle these dues, motorists can log on to the official portal maintained by the National Informatics Center using their vehicle registration number. Officials have advised users to rely only on official portals to avoid fraud.There is also provision for raising disputes. If a consumer feels that an e-notice has been wrongly issued, a complaint can be filed within the same 72-hour window. Failure to comply within this period may still result in a penalty being applied.
