An OTT special about the event, titled ‘The 51st AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Eddie Murphy’, was released recently, with many guests attending the event in honor of Eddie Murphy. This guest list also included one of the most iconic names in comedy, Mel Brooks.At the event, Brooks praised Murphy and called him one of the “modern kings” of comedy in his speech. “Before you were born, even before I was born, the movies were born. One of the greatest gifts, perhaps the greatest gift, was laughter. In its early days, there were the kings of comedy: Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd.”He went on to praise Murphy and talk about how he set the bar high for comedy and was one of the pioneers in the comedy industry. He added: “Some have talents that explode beyond the screen and onto the stage. They create characters that make us look inside ourselves. And there are a few, very few, who did it all. But tonight, beyond the echoes of laughter, we honor a man full of greater surprises, and who broke barriers to move culture forward.”
