Her spokesperson has now addressed the controversy directly, detailing the reasons behind the couple’s approach.
What Meghan Markle’s spokesperson said
“The Duchess has always maintained that there is a distinction between sharing moments of her life and exposing her children to public scrutiny,” her spokesperson told Newsweek. “By obscuring their faces, it is revealing the very principle it stands for: giving children privacy, agency and protection in an increasingly digital world.”
The spokesperson continued, “Far from being contradictory, hiding their faces is reflecting the message he delivered in Geneva: that parents can choose to share family experiences while taking deliberate steps to protect identities, privacy and digital footprints.”
Why has the question of hypocrisy arisen?
The statement comes after questions about whether Meghan’s approach to social media is at odds with her public posts. Last month, the Duchess gave a World Health Organization speech in Geneva, Switzerland, about the harmful effects of social media on children. Her constant social media posts featuring her children, albeit with their faces obscured, prompted some to question the consistency of her stance.
Earlier, in October last year, Meghan also spoke about the issue during an appearance at Project Healthy Minds’ World Mental Health Day festival in New York. “Thankfully, our children are still too young for social media, but we know that day is coming,” she said. “Like many parents, we constantly think about how to embrace the benefits of technology while protecting it from its dangers. And that hopeful desire to separate is becoming impossible.”
The spokesperson’s response makes it clear that Meghan sees her current approach not as a contradiction, but as a practical demonstration of the values she has publicly championed.
