‘Masters of the Universe’: Critics rave about new take
According to Rotten Tomatoes, one critic’s review said, “Freed from the burden of contemporary relevance, ‘Masters of the Universe’ succeeds by doing something refreshingly straightforward: telling a heartwarming fantasy adventure with conviction, humor and heart.” While another shared, “The movie is really funny, especially for 14-year-old boys. There are more sword-based double entenders than anything can shake.“Another reviewer wrote on the site, “The toy-turned-cartoon adaptation instead joins familiar IP films that play on nostalgia to deliver something fun and slightly meaningful in a candy-coated shell.” Another critic rated the film 3 out of 5 and stated, “Masters of the Universe is a typical popcorn movie: something fun and not too serious, with a focus on loud action scenes filled with special effects. For a movie with an iconic 80s toy as the hero, audiences should expect nothing less.”Filmmaker Brian McWilliams took to his social media and stated, “I saw the first screening of Masters of the Universe. Fun movie, great visuals and battles, and a decent comedy that’s true to the source material. My only complaint was that it has the ubiquitous “millennial” writing style where no one can say anything without creating a secondary statement beneath their first line of dialogue. However, I enjoyed it.’Olde Man Grim also wrote “the special effects are FANTASTIC! Seriously, I felt the practical effects and costumes were pretty amazing, and the CGI stuff felt like the pinnacle of Marvel’s work (not the CGI junk we got from Phase 4 onwards).”
