Talking to The Hollywood Reporter India, RJ Balaji said, “I told ‘Karuppu’ to Vijay sir. This was supposed to be his last film before politics. But there were some factors, including his political commitments and his decision about his latest film. He asked me: ‘Can I call you in a week and confirm?’ Later, he called me and explained the reasons. I thought those reasons were perfectly fair, and I said: ‘I absolutely respect your decision. Thank you very much.’” He also added: “I told him two stories because he asked me if I had scripts for him. That was the great respect he gave to my work.” Balaji also revealed that Vijay’s specific questions after the narration helped him rewrite and refine the script.
How ‘Kantara’ changed the climax of ‘Karuppu’
RJ Balaji also shared how ‘Kantara’ inspired the climax of ‘Karuppu’. “After the Singam sequence, another scene was planned. But I was not satisfied with the climax. I felt good. Then I watched the morning show of ‘Kantara’. In the last 10 minutes, the people in the theater literally went into a trance. That experience inspired me a lot,” he said. Since ‘Karuppu’ was based around the deity Karuppasamy, Balaji felt that the film needed a stronger spiritual and emotional ending. “That was the moment when the idea came to me,” he explained, adding that the energy and impact of ‘Kantara’ prompted him to rethink the final parts of the film.

RJ Balaji said that the project finally came to Suriya after the producers came to know that he had narrated the story to Vijay. “They asked me if I could narrate the same script to Mr. Suriya,” he recalled.
