Karol G had a big night at the 2026 American Music Awards on Monday, May 25 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The Colombian star performed ‘Ivonny Bonita’, accepted the honor of international artist of excellence, and later found out she won best Latin album for ‘Tropicoqueta’.The surprise victory came moments later John Legend lauded his influence and awarded him one of the AMA’s rarest honors.

Billboard reports that Karol G turned the AMA stage into a soft, snowy stage to perform ‘Ivonny Bonita,’ a track from his 2025 album ‘Tropicoqueta.’ She began behind a sheer curtain as white swirls fell around her, then progressed in a shimmering silver outfit as she choreographed her solo.After the performance, John Legend took the stage to present the honor of 2026 International Artist of Excellence. He also praised his historic Coachella poster in April. The award had not been given since 2009, when Whitney Houston received it.Karol G thanked the Legend and marked the moment with a playful nod to his name. “What an honour, John, to give me this award … this will be a legend in my career,” he said.Then he talked about what music has given him. “I want to say, more than anything, this career has given me the most important thing in my life: purpose,” said Karol G. “I can say things in my songs that become the voice of many people, a place to heal, a safe place. I think my life is meaningful because of my music.”

As Karol G prepared to leave the stage, Legenda stopped him with another announcement. He also won Best Latin Album for ‘Tropicoqueta’. The singer was surprised to hear the news.Released in June 2025, ‘Tropicoqueta’ debuted at #1 on the Top Latin Albums chart and peaked at #3 on the Billboard 200. Karol G will also release his Viajando Por El Mundo Tropitour in July, after the tour sold 2 million tickets in four days.She walked into the night with three nominations, including Best Female Latin Artist and Best Latin Song for ‘Latina Foreva’. The American Music Awards are produced by Dick Clark Productions, owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a joint venture between Eldridge Industries and Billboard parent company Penske Media.
