Daniel Baldwin on Jimmy Kimmel’s role political hatred
According to AOL, Baldwin was careful not to directly blame Kimmel for the shooting, but questioned whether the host was aware of his influence. “Now, does that absolve Kimmel of any wrongdoing? Yeah, he didn’t, but did he play a role in it? Does it matter that he played a role? Is that the point? Is he doing it because he wants it to happen? I don’t know the answer to those questions, but I’m sad, man,” he said. The second-eldest of the Baldwin brothers, who became a Conservative in 2016, said he had never seen a high-profile figure speak out so responsibly about political violence. He recalled being on movie sets where well-known personalities made damaging remarks about politicians. “Your voice carries weight. Your words carry followers and people,” he said.Baldwin also reflected on how the moment has affected his feelings about his profession. “I was proud to say I was an actor. Now you walk into a room and say, yes, I’m an actor. It’s not proud to say that because of the hate that comes out of that,” he added.
Daniel Baldwin contrasts Jimmy Kimmel Johnny Carson
In making his case, Baldwin drew sharp comparisons to Johnny Carson’s response to the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan. Speaking at the Academy Awards a day after the incident, Carson told the audience, “Because of the incredible events of yesterday, that old adage, the show must go on, seemed pretty irrelevant.”Baldwin took that moment as an example of the restraint and decency he now lacked. “We never hated anyone. We never wanted someone to die or laughed at them to die. It’s really disturbing to me,” he said.
Controversy over Jimmy Kimmel
According to Variety , Kimmel was already under fire before Baldwin’s remarks, after he joked that he referred to Melania Trump as an “expectant widow” two days before the Washington Hilton shooting. Melania responded by describing his words as “hateful and violent rhetoric” aimed at dividing the country, saying they were “corrosive”.President Trump has called on ABC to fire Kimmel, writing on Truth Social that the host “must be fired immediately by Disney and ABC.”Kimmel pushed back at the criticism, insisting that her performance was a “pretend burn” that had no connection to the assassination attempt, and clarified that the joke was about the age difference between Melania and Trump and their expressions when they are together. George Clooney stepped in to defend Kimmel at the 51st Chaplin Awards, though his remarks sparked his own online backlash. Between Kimmel’s joke and a comment from Clooney, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt joked before the event that “there’s going to be some shots in the room tonight” as she previewed Trump’s speech.
