As India prepares to adapt the fast-paced world of T20 cricket to the demands of the longest format, skipper Shabman Gul He believes that the game is still nothing compared to Test cricket.India begin their Red Ball season with a one-off Test against Afghanistan in Milanpur on Saturday. Although the fixture does not count towards the World Test Championship standings, Gayle made it clear that the occasion is of great importance to a team looking to build momentum ahead of a crucial stretch of Test cricket.Speaking in a video released by the BCCI, Gill described Test cricket as the format that gives him the most satisfaction as a player.“For me, it’s the most satisfying format. If you do well in that format, I feel the best about myself. The feeling of wearing the whites, wearing the baggy cap. It doesn’t change anything, it’s the traditional way, the OG way of playing cricket,” he said.Test timing presents a unique challenge for India’s players. Days after the end of another IPL season, many squad members will now have to adapt to the physical and mental demands of five-day cricket.Gill acknowledges that the transition is far from straightforward.“The weather is very different. You play T20 at night and it’s almost 40 degrees now so a lot of mental challenges come into play. And apart from all the technical things you have to adapt to this format, the reason for adapting to this format in particular is because it’s a great format and gives you a lot of respect around the world,” he explained.India’s squad also features a number of young faces, many of whom have been exposed during their journey through the national set-up. The skipper expressed faith in the upcoming generation and believes that they have the ability to serve Indian cricket for years to come.“I have played with most of them in the Indian set-up and whenever we have had a series, be it overseas or tour games, they have shown that they are very exciting young talents. Hopefully they will represent, work hard and serve the country for a very long time.”For Gill personally, leading India is one of the proudest moments of his career. The Punjab batsmen grew up playing cricket in the region and captaining the national team in front of familiar surroundings makes the occasion even more special.“To be able to lead my country, I’ve always dreamed of playing for the country, let alone leading the country. It’s a huge honor for me to do it in front of my home ground where I grew up playing.”While India entered the competition as favourites, Gayle was quick to dismiss any suggestion that Afghanistan should be underestimated. He pointed to the remarkable progress in Afghanistan since the two teams faced each other for the first time in Test cricket in 2018.“I remember the Test we played against them and their journey from there. Having played the semi-final of the World Cup, the semi-final of the T20 World Cup, they have done really well in all the ICC tournaments. The kind of talent they have, they are no less of an opponent for us. They have really good talent, they are an amazing team and it is going to be a very interesting Test match.”Although the match does not offer World Test Championship points, Gill believes it could prove crucial in helping India prepare for what lies ahead. After the Afghanistan match, India have nine Championship Tests remaining in the current cycle, making this a crucial opportunity to regain the fine-tuned combination and their red-ball rhythm.“We have got a very exciting opportunity to play these Test matches and then we have nine Tests before the WTC final. So this test match is very important for us to prepare.”For a young Indian team in transition, Afghanistan may not impact the Test standings, but it offers something equally valuable: a chance to hone habits, build confidence and lay the foundation for the challenges that await in the coming months.
