It’s the year of eloquent cinema, and the celebrations have arrived on the steps of Cannes. ‘Paper Tiger’, starring Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver and Miles Teller, received a 7-minute standing ovation at the premiere for its poignant remarks. While many A-listers walked the red carpet, the film’s lead actor was unable to join the cast for the screening of their film on May 16, 2026.

The driver and cashier joined their director, James Gray, and fellow cast members to pose for the cameras; however, everyone noticed that one person was missing: Scarlet Johansson. At a May 17 press conference, Gray read a statement apologizing to the actor for not attending the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. “I’m sorry I couldn’t be with you today. James, I know you’re reading this right now, and this part is really going to tear you up,” she said, noting that she believes the story is rooted in what matters most: human connection, identity and ever-evolving values.
Scarlett Johansson apologizes for her absence
“I’m sorry. But I want you to know how much it means to me to be a part of something you’ve created with such care and intent from your artistic soul,” the statement continued, according to Deadline. Earlier, Variety reported that Johansson was unable to make it to the south of France, as the actress has been busy filming the reboot of “The Exorcist.” Johansson concluded the statement by noting that cinema has the power to connect audiences through a shared experience, and that collective empathy is necessary these days. Meanwhile, James Gray attempted to join Scarlett Johansson in the festivities via FaceTiming to show audience reactions. However, the call went unanswered, and he humorously showed his desperate emotions.
