Daniel Craig is a British actor, known for playing James Bond in ‘Casino Royale’, ‘Skyfall’ and ‘Spectre’. Although the role made him a global icon, Craig has never been shy about how sharp he really is. In 2015, just days after wrapping up an eight-month shoot on ‘Spectre’, Craig sat down for a candid interview with Time Out London, and what he had to say about returning as 007 immediately made headlines.
When Daniel Craig and James Bond hit a rough patch
In a past interview with Time Out London, Craig made no effort to hide his fatigue with the role. When asked if he envisioned making another Bond film, Craig replied: “Now? I’d rather break this glass and cut my wrists… I’m over it at the moment. We are done. All I want to do is move on.” The interview came just days after the 47-year-old completed his fourth outing as James Bond and it showed.
The only reason he would return as Daniel Craig and James Bond
Despite his strong words, Craig didn’t close the door completely. “I haven’t thought about it,” he admitted. “For at least a year or two, I don’t want to think about it. I don’t know what the next step is. I have no idea. Not because I’m trying to be cagey. Who knows? At the moment, we’ve done it. I’m not arguing with anyone about anything. If I were to do another Bond film, it would only be for the money.” A refreshing introduction to one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
Why Daniel Craig playing James Bond is harder than it seems
Craig also used the interview to shed light on the unique challenge of playing the world’s most famous spy. “The best acting is when you don’t care about the surface. And Bond is the opposite of that,” he explains. “You have to worry about what you look like. It’s a struggle. I know how Bond wears his suit and how he walks into a room is important. But as an actor I don’t af@*k about the look I want to give! So I have to play with two things.“The tension between the demands of the role and his instincts as an actor seemed strange and honest.
He put his all into Daniel Craig and James Bond’s ‘Spectre’
Through all the fatigue, Craig made it clear that he gave ‘Spectre’ everything he had. He personally encouraged ‘Skyfall’ director Sam Mendes to return and also contributed ideas to the script.“Every idea I’ve had for a Bond film, I’ve put into this,” he said. Whatever his feelings about the franchise, he clearly left nothing on the table.
