Rob Reiner is one of the Hollywood names that is gone but not forgotten. Actor-filmmaker Rob left an impact not only because of his work, but also because of the bonds, connections and friendships he made. One such connection that is still celebrated is with an actor Billy Crystal. Rob and Billy not only worked together, they were like family to each other. During a recent talk show appearance, Billy reminisced about Rob Reiner, the last moment, and the conversation, which left him emotional.
Billy Crystal reminds his filmmaker Rob Reiner
The ‘Harry Met Sally’ actress opened up about Rob Riener and their relationship on ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’. He shared that as soon as something good happens in his life, he feels the urge to call his late friend. “There are so many moments when something good happens, or [I think] ‘Isn’t he crazy?’ I want to pick up the phone and call [him] and say: ‘Did you see?’ Because that’s what we would do,” said the 78-year-old actor.Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, lost their lives in a suspected double homicide in December. Remembering the filmmaker, Billy went on to describe him as “funny, devoted, without the best opinions, fighting for the truth for our people.”She added that she could “talk about anything” to her ‘Harry Met Sally’ director, adding that “he was like an uncle to my kids.”
Billy Crystal gets emotional as he talks about his recent conversation with Rob Reiner
Reflecting on Crystal and Reiner’s friendship, the host admitted that it must be difficult for Billy to talk about his dear friend at last month’s Oscars tribute. This left Billy reeling, struggling to find the right words for a couple of seconds.“No, I’m fine. It was just after the tragedy. We spent the night before, talking about our careers together,” Crystal said before revealing, “We were talking about the movie business and how it’s changed, and how people don’t go to theaters like they used to. And we talked about how you can’t control how a movie is going to go.”Their final words were about work, film and some great advice. “It’s the experience of doing what you can control. And the experiences we had together and the experiences he had with the actors in his other films were so extraordinary,” he mentioned, before adding, “He (Rob Reiner) said that’s something you always have, having great hits, but you hold people back.”
The Oscar tribute would have brought a smile to Rob Reiner’s face, says Billy Crystal
The Oscars paid the most beautiful tribute to Rob Reiner this year. Accordingly, Crystal and her ‘When Harry Met Sally’ co-stars Meg Ryan, Demi Moore, John Cusack, Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, Kiefer Sutherland, Kathy Bates, Annette Bening, Daphne Zuniga, Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, Jerry O’Connell, Wil Wheaton, Fred Savage, Kevin Pollack and Carol Pollack took to the stage. Recalling the moment, Crystal said, “If I can get the actors from those movies to go out with me, that is [would] they really smiled at him. So I got in touch with all of them.’
