The recent non-cooperation notice issued by the Federation of Western India Cine Workers (FWICE) against Ranveer Singh has once again brought the industry’s bans and restrictions into public debate. Such acts are not exclusive to Bollywood. South Indian film industries have also faced similar controversies involving actors and technicians over the years.
Shane Nigam’s repeated clashes with producer bodies
Malayalam actor Shane Nigam has had several clashes with industry bodies in his career. Claims were filed by the producers for delays, scheduling concerns and alleged losses related to the film projects. This led to interventions by organizations such as the Kerala Film Producers Association (KFPA), FEFKA and AMMA, reported the Indian Express.In 2019, disagreements over projects including ‘Veyil’ and ‘Qurbani’ starrer Shane Nigam escalated. The producers complained that some of the actions damaged the productions and caused economic setbacks.Fresh complaints emerged from within the Malayalam film industry in 2023 and. Shane once again made cuts alongside actor Sreenath Bhasi. News Minute reports say that the two actors were accused of misconduct and substance abuse.Discussions between stakeholders eventually paved the way for a solution. After negotiations and mutual understanding the restrictions were removed and thanks to this the actor started working on the following projects.
Vadivelu’s long standing conflict in Kollywood
Few industrial disputes in Tamil cinema have lasted as long as the standoff between comedian and actor Vadivelu. The controversy revolved around the ambitious historical comedy film ‘Imsai Arasan 24am Pulikesi’.During the production, the project had repeated setbacks creating disagreements between the actor and the authors of the film. TOI City reported that differences over casting decisions along with costume design and production requirements led to further tensions.Producers complained that the stalled project caused huge financial losses. Complaints were reportedly filed with the Tamil Film Producers Council and the Nadigar Sangam. The issue became one of the biggest controversies in Kollywood and the resulting restrictions kept Vadivelu away from big projects for several years.Now Vadiveluk is back in Tollywood with great projects like ‘Maamannan’, ‘Maareesan’ and many more.
Controversial ban on Sreenath Bhasi
Actor Sreenath Bhasi also faced a dark phase in 2023 after Kerala producer bodies announced a non-cooperation directive against the ‘Home’ actor.Reportedly, the producers filed a complaint alleging that Sreenath Bhasi was in the habit of signing multiple projects at the same time and allotted the same shooting dates for different projects. This led to major shooting clashes and also financial losses for the producers, The New Indian Express reported.The actor was already embroiled in a controversy after an incident in 2022 during the promotional activities of his film ‘Chattambi’ where he verbally abused a female anchor.There were discussions with the actor and he was advised to address the concerns raised by the producers. The restrictions against him were lifted after Sreenath Bhasi’s apology.
Thilakan’s stance against industrial power groups
He was part of the legendary cast Thilakan which was the most talked about ban related controversies in Malayalam cinema. Known for his outspoken nature, the celebrated performer publicly criticized influential organizations and challenged what he saw as the unfair concentration of power within the industry.Thilakan had repeatedly alleged that a powerful group was influencing professional choices and casting decisions, even before the Hema Commission had indicated the same after several years. The veteran actor said that these differences got him rejected from various projects.Speaking to Lukose about artistic freedom and the idea of bans, Thilakan said, “An artist can never be banned. Neither can his talent. Art is like an ocean. It has no boundaries.”
