Anupam Kher challenges himself to return to theater at 71 and after 550 films: “I don’t take myself seriously”

Anupam Kher has challenged himself to return to theater at the age of 71 and after 550 films:

Anupam Kher he’s a veteran and who can deny that? The actor, who is known for several films — from ‘Saaransh’ to ‘Special 26’, ‘Baby’, ‘A Wednesday!’, ‘The Kashmir Files’, among many others, continues to inspire many. Be it his fitness or dedication to his work, Kher shows the younger generation how it’s done. But even though he has made 550 films so far, he is not satisfied. He will return to theater with a play called ‘Jaane Pehchaane Anjaane’, in which he also stars. Swaroop Sampath. The thing about talking to or meeting Kher is that you always take something away with you, whether it’s his wisdom, his positivity or the way he carries himself. In an exclusive chat with ETimes, when asked how she has managed to maintain her childlike excitement despite spending so many years in the industry, she said, “I keep trying my chances and that’s possible when you’re afraid of failure.”He further elaborated, “90 percent of people don’t try. There is a famous line by Osho where if you try you risk failure, and if you don’t make sure. I don’t take myself seriously either. I don’t carry the burden of Anupam Kher on my shoulders. I am proud of the films I have done, but I also feel kar rauria huaj woh. If I have the greatest enemy of brilliance to be competent, I will not try to be great mujhe lagega ke yeh line toh bol hi lunga So I try to make things difficult for me and like nothing, because usmein toh sab kuch difficult hai live audience hai, log hasenge ya nai I have done enough songs for us, which Shaan sings. So everything you do must not be what I did.The actor added that he always tries to bring something special to everything he does. “So the last three plays I’ve done, one with them Kirron Kher Named ‘Salgirah’, and my one-man play were unique things to do. My autobiography on stage, a living actor has not done it to date. Then I did a play Rakesh Bediwritten by him, titled ‘Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha’, with Neena Gupta and me But, unfortunately, Neena decided not to do any more shows. So I had this great desire to do a play. Then I saw this Marathi play directed by him Gajendra Ahire. It is a beautiful play about the relationships of today’s three generations: the retired generation, the middle-aged and the new generation. He will identify each one because he talks about his subjects and because it is done in a very theatrical way. I am the narrator as well as the character. For the first time, I am doing a play with 12 characters. It’s so hard to do it these days and get 12 committed actors that will fit your dates. I am the only person who has been working quite hard, but I am very happy that Swaroop ji decided to join us and we are a very good team.’How is he never satisfied though? He replied, “You think I am this age. But in my heart, I am still a 20-year-old. Main iss baat ka ehsaas hi nai rakhta hu that maine 550 films.”With that, he took on the biggest challenge and said, “Learning line is the first challenge because you’re on stage. When you’re a newcomer, you don’t have to worry about my reputation. But now that I’m famous, so I have to match the repertoire of work I’ve done.” But I don’t mind failing. It’s okay But at least I’ll have the luxury of trying. Ismein bohot saari tickets go out but that’s a joy, there is no redemption. So it shakes off the rust and dust from an actor. It keeps me light, keeps me away from Alzheimer’s. You are strict. Warna toh log 60-65 saal pe retire because ki sochte hai. I would like to do this play when I’m 90 years old.’He also said that we humans should not limit ourselves or our choices. “The point is, we are limitless but we limit ourselves. We accept what society says. Gharwale bhi bolte hai, society bolti hai, kitna kaam karoge. Arre possibility hai life ki, why not?”On the film front, Kher recently directed ‘Tanvi The Great’, which has already garnered critical acclaim.
