Alia Bhatt says Indian cinema is still male-dominated despite the success of female-led films globally:

While female-led films in Hollywood continue to dominate the global box office, Alia Bhatt feel Indian cinema it still focuses largely on catering to male audiences. The actor, who is currently attending the Cannes Film Festival, recently spoke about the need for a more gender-neutral story in Indian films. According to him, cinema should focus on stories rather than whether the lead actor is male or female.

‘About female viewers?’

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Alia said that the global box office in recent years has shown how women-centric films can be huge commercial hits.Referring to the Indian film industry, the actor said that discussions about box office numbers are often based on the idea that most moviegoers are male, which is why filmmakers tend to target the “mass audience”.However, Alia questioned what happens to the female audience if movies are designed with only males in mind.He clarified that he is not asking filmmakers to ignore male audiences, but believes that films should be “gender agnostic” where storytelling remains the highest priority.“It doesn’t matter whether a film has a man or a woman in the lead. The story should matter,” Alia said, adding that she hopes to see more female-led theatrical films in the future.
