Ahead of India’s upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, Chopra reflected on Gayle’s record as a leader in the 50-over format and suggested that the young captain has fully established himself in the role.India lead the series after registering a resounding victory in the only Test match. The ODI league will begin on June 13 at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, with Gayle once again leading the side. Gul took over the duties of ODI captaincy. Rohit Sharmabut the results have not gone India’s way so far. Under his leadership, India have played six ODIs out of which they have won only two and lost four. The team lost the home series against New Zealand 1–2 in January 2026.Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra highlighted the numbers behind Gill’s debut as ODI captain.“Shubman Gill has captained six matches, and we have lost both series. We have won only two matches, one in Australia and one against New Zealand. So, Shibman Gill is not satisfied as a captain in this format yet,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel Akash Chopra.Despite the disappointing results, Chopra believes the Afghanistan series presents a great opportunity for Gill to turn things around and start building a strong record as captain.“It’s a big story. You want to change that. You really want him to just stamp his authority, even though he’s not stopping with the bat. He’s scored runs as captain, and he’ll keep scoring runs. The form he’s in, you’ll look to him to score runs,” he continued.Although questions remain over his captaincy record, Gill’s performance as a batsman in ODI cricket has been exceptional. Since making his debut against New Zealand in 2019, the Punjab batsman has scored 2,953 runs in 61 matches at an impressive average of 55.72. He is among an exclusive group of only five Indian players to have scored a double century in ODI cricket, underscoring his stature as one of the format’s premier batsmen.
