Looks like Renault is getting closer to launching a new compact SUV for the Indian market. The French automaker has filed a design patent for the upcoming Berger SUV in India, but there’s a catch! Now before we talk about it, this new model will take on the likes of Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, and Tata Punch.Interestingly, the patent filing is registered under the ‘games and toys’ category, suggesting the images may be of a scale model rather than the final production vehicle. However, the filing still provides a clear look at the SUV’s expected styling direction.Earlier this year in March, Renault showcased the Berger Concept, which previewed a rugged compact SUV under the Duster. Newly surfaced patent images show a design that stays very close to the original concept model. The Berger has a boxy and upright design with square wheel arches, muscular fenders and a tall stance. The front end features a blacked-out fascia with C-shaped LED DRLs and a wide grille setup. The rear continues the tough-looking design theme with a straight tailgate, distinctive LED tail lamps and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel.Once launched, the Berger is expected to enter one of the most competitive SUV segments in India. Although Renault has not yet officially revealed the technical specifications, we can expect the SUV to be offered with multiple powertrain choices. These may include a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol hybrid engine and a new 1.2-litre four-cylinder MPFi turbo-petrol unit. Renault is also expected to offer a factory-fitted CNG option for the Indian market. As of now, the brand has not confirmed any details regarding the powertrain options.
