India’s passenger vehicle market saw strong momentum in May 2026, with several automakers posting healthy year-on-year growth. Leading the pack was Maruti Suzuki, which recorded its highest ever monthly sales, while companies like Tata Motors, Hyundai, Mahindra, Kia and Toyota also registered positive growth during the month.
Car sales May 2026: How brands fared
Maruti Suzuki India reported total sales of 2,42,688 units in May 2026, marking the company’s best ever monthly performance. Compared to 1,80,077 units sold in May 2025, total sales increased by around 34.8%.The company’s domestic sales also touched a new all-time high of 1,93,535 units, registering a year-on-year growth of nearly 39 percent as against 1,38,690 units sold during the same month last year. Exports contributed 41,914 units, while sales to other OEMs stood at 7,239 units.Tata Motors has also made strong progress in the passenger vehicle segment. The company sold 59,090 passenger vehicles in the domestic market in May 2026, up 42 percent from 41,557 units in May 2025. Total passenger vehicle sales, including exports, reached 59,790 units, up 42 percent from 42,040 units sold a year ago.Electric vehicles continue to play an important role in the growth story of Tata Motors. Combined domestic and export EV sales grew 85 percent to a record 10,517 units in 2025, up from 5,685 units in May 2025. Hyundai Motor India reported domestic sales of 47,837 units in May 2026, registering a year-on-year growth of 9.1%. With exports of 13,300 units, the company’s total monthly sales stood at 61,137 units, showing an overall growth of 4.1 percent over the same month last year.Mahindra & Mahindra continued its strong run in the SUV segment. The automaker sold 58,021 units in the domestic market in May 2026, registering an increase of 11 percent over the year-ago period.Kia India also achieved its highest sales in May since its entry into the Indian market. The company reported wholesale sales of 27,586 units during the month, registering a year-on-year growth of 23.6% compared to 22,315 units sold in May 2025. Toyota Kirloskar Motor also ended the month on a positive note. The company sold 33,128 units in May 2026, registering a growth of 7% compared to 30,864 units sold during the same period last year. This includes 30,574 units sold in the domestic market and 2,554 units exported.
