Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’ has served as the blueprint for film’s ultimate storytelling for over a century, inspiring generations of filmmakers with its timeless themes of adventure, survival and homecoming. Now the ancient epic will receive its most ambitious cinematic interpretation yet with Christopher Nolan’s upcoming sci-fi epic, joined by a stellar cast including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong’o.Before viewers embark on Nolan’s journey, here are five screen adaptations of ‘The Odyssey’ that are worth revisiting.
1. ‘O brother, where art thou?’ (2000)
Set in 1930s Mississippi, this gem from the Coen Brothers follows the lazy and fastidious Ulysses Everett McGill, played by George Clooney, who escapes a chain gang with gullible gang members Pete and Delmar on a quest to find hidden treasure. In reality, Everett is rushing his wife, Penny, to marry someone else. Along the way, they accidentally become folk radio stars, encounter three river mermaids, and are stolen by a one-eyed Bible salesman. The Coen brothers said they had never read “The Odyssey,” but somehow they built a hilarious and brilliant masterpiece around it. If you haven’t seen it yet, Amazon Prime Video awaits.
2. ‘The Odyssey’ (1997)
This visually ambitious television miniseries remains one of the most faithful screen adaptations ever made. Armand Assante stars as Odysseus, who follows his perilous ten-year journey home after the Trojan War, guided by the goddess Athena, played by Isabella Rossellini. With elaborate sets, large-scale battles and fantasy elements that were spectacular for television at the time, the series brought Homer’s epic to life for a new generation of viewers. The entire miniseries is available to stream on YouTube for those willing to take the full journey.
3. ‘Ulysses’ (1954)
One of the first major film adaptations of ‘The Odyssey’, this Italian-American epic starred Kirk Douglas as Ulysses. After the Trojan War, the warrior king is cursed by the gods to wander the seas, eventually landing with severe amnesia. As he slowly regains his memory, he recalls his encounters with the giant Cyclops Polyphemus and the sorceress Circe, back in Ithaca, while his wife Penelope stops a palace full of suitors. Blending classic mythology with old Hollywood grand spectacle, it became the benchmark adventure film of the 1950s. A piece of film history worth following on Dailymotion.
4. ‘The Odyssey’ (1968)
Directed by Franco Rossi, this acclaimed Italian television miniseries is considered one of the most poetic and textually accurate visualizations of Homer’s epic. Rather than relying on fantasy spectacle, the series maintained a grounded, literary tone while faithfully recreating iconic episodes, including encounters with the Cyclops, Circe, sirens and Calypso. Widely praised for its performances and storytelling, it remains the definitive version of the tale. For purists who want to do Homer right, this one lives on YouTube.
5. ‘Odysseus: Journey Underworld’
This dark fantasy adaptation adds a lot of action to ‘The Odyssey’. Starring Arnold Vosloo as Odysseus, the film begins after the Trojan War when the legendary warrior and his men are trapped on a mysterious island ruled by dark supernatural forces. Unlike traditional adaptations, this version leans toward horror and mythological fantasy, turning the journey into a battle against monstrous creatures, curses, and the terrifying underworld itself.
