Zoe Ball reveals her childhood in Who Do You Think You Are?
Becoming the first celebrity to understand her ancestry this year, Zoe Ball revealed she is keen to find out more about her family following her mother’s death in 2024. Born in Blackpool in 1970, the British personality moved to Buckinghamshire at the age of 2 after his parents divorced. “We lost my mum last year, and it really made me step back and look at the bigger picture and reassess what’s important in my life,” he said on the show, according to the Liverpool Echo UK. Zoe revealed that she was raised by her father and her stepmother, Di, with less information about her mother’s family. “I didn’t see my mother for 14 years, which is a long time for a child not to see their mother. When we reconnected, when I was 18, there was a lot of mending to do,” he said, adding that his childhood was tough. Taking a grueling journey from Scotland to Cornwall, Ball began researching both sides of his family. Sharing one of the most harrowing incidents, the radio host said her maternal grandmother had mental health issues. “I don’t remember ever meeting my mother’s mother. Her name was Margaret, but everyone called her Peg. For a while, she was in what would be called an asylum in those days because she was struggling with her mental health,” he said. In the episode, Zoe also mentioned a story about her great-great-grandfather, Cornish miner James Temby. He wanted to relocate to Guernsey, where he was promised a job in the granite quarries. However, he and his family were deported, according to Digital Spy.
