It is opened by Yash TonkFight Club failure at the box office
Despite being a celebrated television actor, Yash Tonk never quite shook off the industry’s tendency to box him in with the tag of ‘small screen actor’, especially when his films underperformed. He produced the 2006 action film ‘Fight Club’ Sohail KhanIt was one of those films that didn’t find commercial traction.“Fight Club didn’t work the way they hoped. As a concept, the film didn’t take off in India,” recalls Tonk, before adding philosophically, “Everybody has an opinion; you can’t make everybody happy.”
Salman Khan’s eye was caught by the thunderous applause
What the film lacked in the box office, it more than made up for in Tonk’s one unforgettable screening moment. At the test screening of the film at Rajendra Kumar’s Bandra studios, attended by Salman Khan himself, something remarkable happened that would change the course of Tonk’s film career.“When the film ended, all the actors stood up and applauded my character; I felt very proud. Salman Bhai was sitting throughout, but he is himself; his presence alone is enough. However, he liked my performance, which is why he gave me two films after that: ‘Main Aur Mrs Khanna’ and ‘Jai Ho’.”Salman Khan’s quiet, sit-down confession, Tonk says, was his true paisa-vasool moment worth more than any number at the box office.
Yash Tonk on his relationship with Salman Khan
Beyond the professional collaborations, Tonk describes his relationship with the superstar as much more personal and warm.“I like his company; who doesn’t want to be with him. I’ve been to his house, his farm. Tonk recalled a memorable night on the set of the Sohail Khan-directed ‘Jai Ho’ as both he and Sohail planned an early night before the 7 am call time only for Salman to intervene.“We were both walking and after a drink we decided to hit the bed. Just then, Sohail got a call that Salman bhai was calling him. My boyfriend also got a call that I was also called. Sohail started laughing and said, I have to go. Then we partied late into the night.”However, Tonke managed to set it up in time. “I never wanted to give the excuse that I was late because I was with Salman bhai,” Tonk said with proud relief.
