Peter Jackson has corrected Ryan GoslingThe much-debated exit from ‘The Lovely Bones’ comes years after the actress revealed she was fired from the 2009 film after gaining 60 pounds for the role. He was cast as Gosling’s father Saoirse RonanJackson’s character in the adaptation of Alice Sebold’s novel, but Mark Wahlberg he later replaced it. Jackson now says that when an actor is recast, he sees it as the filmmakers’ responsibility, not the actor’s fault.
Peter Jackson talks Ryan Gosling’s makeover
After receiving the Palme d’Or at Cannes, Peter Jackson was asked about Ryan Gosling’s past comments, Entertainment Weekly reports. Gosling told THR in 2010 that he gained weight for “The Lovely Bones” because he thought his character needed to look different.Jackson didn’t discuss Gosling’s shooting in detail, but talked about the reshoots in general. He said: “I’m not going to talk about specific examples of actors because it’s a personal, private thing and it’s not their fault.”The filmmaker added, “Every time we recast an actor, it’s really our fault that we didn’t get the casting right and cast the wrong person for a role. It’s not because they did anything wrong.”Jackson said the problem usually comes down to whether the casting fits the film. “So I’m not going to talk about individuals, but you’ve realized that what you imagined is not really happening, and that means we’ve made a mistake and therefore we take full responsibility,” he said.
Ryan Gosling’s ‘The Lovely Bones’ outing
Jackson also praised Gosling, saying, “Ryan is a fantastic actor, as we know.” He added that the film is also about “the chemistry, both on camera and behind the camera”, and how an actor fits into a story, a character and a team.In a 2010 interview with THR, Gosling said, “We had a different idea of how the character should look. I really thought he should be 210 pounds.” He added, “we didn’t talk much during the pre-production process, that was the problem”.Gosling also said, “I just showed up on set, and it went bad. I was fat and unemployed at the time.”Saoirse Ronan reminisced about changing in 2024 on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast. The actress said she had “done some preparations” and was sad, adding, “I think I just loved Ryan and his dog, George.”Ronan added: “But I think the reasons they broke up were completely valid.” He said Mark Wahlberg came into it with more real-life experience as a father, when Gosling was “27. He was young.”In the end, the role went to Wahlberg, and Jackson’s comments place the decision in the casting process rather than Gosling personally.
