From ‘Maachis’ to ‘Kya Kehna’
The actress rose to fame after appearing in films like ‘Maachis’, ‘Josh’ and ‘Kya Kehna’. He was academically inclined and prepared UPSC Exams with dreams of becoming an IAS officer. Apart from academics, he also trained in classical music and worked as a music teacher at Vasant Valley School and as a history teacher at The Doon School.

However, it was filmmaker Gulzar’s political drama Maachis that was the definitive breakthrough in his career. His portrayal of a troubled Sikh youth caught up in political violence was widely praised by critics and audiences alike.After this success, Chandrachur Singh appeared in several commercially successful films including ‘Daag: The Fire’ and ‘Dil Kya Kare’. Her role in Josh, where she shared screen space with Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai, further boosted her popularity among young audiences.Just when his career momentum was growing rapidly, the actor’s life is said to have changed after a serious water-skiing accident in Goa. The incident resulted in repeated shoulder dislocations and extensive joint damage. Reports suggest that the injury required extensive treatment and recovery, forcing him to stay away from films for several years.The long recovery phase limited his physical condition and acting opportunities at a crucial stage in his career. By the time it recovered, the landscape of the industry had changed significantly and cinema offers had been significantly reduced.Speaking about this difficult phase in an earlier interaction with Midday, Chandrachur Singh said, “I went through a phase of disillusionment, but a sense of surrender came soon after. When you enter the industry with a film like Maachis, your expectations are higher. But I could show my skills based on offers only. I’m happy with the little work I’ve done. I didn’t want to sell myself short.“Despite being away from mainstream cinema for many years, the actor finally made a comeback through digital platforms and supporting roles. Aaryan appeared next to him Sushmita Sen and later featured in ‘Cuttputlli’ Akshay Kumar.Although his filmography is relatively limited compared to some of his contemporaries, Chandrachur Singh continues to be fondly remembered by audiences who grew up watching Hindi cinema of the late 1990s.
