For most of the past decade, Derrick Lewis has occupied a unique place in the UFC heavyweight landscape. The championship came close but never stayed, but the knockouts kept coming.The personality has never dimmed, and generations of contenders have come and gone, and ‘The Black Beast’ remains significant. With 16 knockouts, more than any fighter in UFC history, Lewis has equalized violence and entertainment. Perhaps that’s why his presence at UFC Freedom 250 feels fitting.A veteran with more than 40 UFC appearances behind him, Lewis finds himself on one of the most unusual stages the sport has ever seen – a fight card set against the backdrop of the White House, as America celebrates its 250th year.For a man who has made a career out of creating memorable moments, it feels different even before he steps inside the cage.“It was kind of crazy because it’s my first time in D.C. Seeing these buildings, being right next to the White House and seeing all the security here, it’s great. It’s a great experience.“I’ve fought all over the world and in a lot of big arenas, but this is different. This is my Super Bowl, my championship fight. To be able to fight here in the White House, it’s the top of any sport. It’s with them all, even the World Cup.”It’s something special and I’ll always remember it,” Lewis told Timesofindia.com in an exclusive chat ahead of UFC Freedom 250.
Trump’s call and a spot on the card
Ironically, Lewis should never have been here.When the original Freedom 250 card took shape, its name was missing. But when the President of the United States reportedly wondered aloud why one of his favorite fighters wasn’t on the bill, plans quickly changed.UFC CEO Dana White pitched a heavyweight bout against Josh Hockett, and Lewis suddenly found himself headed to Washington.This wasn’t Donald Trump’s first sign of love for Lewis. Trump personally called Lewis after one of his victories in 2025, a gesture that stunned the heavyweight.Learning that the president had played a role in getting him back on the White House card prompted a similar reaction.“It’s an unreal feeling. I’m just amazed that he said that. In the middle of everything that’s going on in the world, he was thinking about me. I thought that was great.“I don’t really know what to think or say about it. I just thought it was really cool. It’s one of those things you never really expect. You just appreciate it,” he said.
Experienced and budding showman
At 41, Lewis knows exactly where he stands. He’s one of the most recognizable names in the division, a two-time title challenger whose 29 victories and record-breaking knockout tally have made him one of the UFC’s most enduring attractions.But standing in front of him this weekend will be one of the new names in the division.Josh Hockett is undefeated at 9-0 and has only three UFC fights to his name, but his rise has been rapid. A former wrestler and football player, Hockett carries himself with the theatrical edge often associated with professional wrestling more than traditional MMA.His alter ego, loud declarations and verbal banter have made him one of the sport’s more colorful figures.They have also brought Lewis into their sights. Earlier in the week, Hockett questioned Lewis’ motivation and suggested he found it difficult to respect a fighter who had ‘lost’ his previous fight.Lewis suggests that trash talk is little more than background noise.“Not at all, it’s just a normal fight week thing. You’re going to have to say something like that. I don’t know what else you’re going to say.“Everybody tries to sell the fight and get people interested. That’s part of it. I don’t really pay attention to that stuff,” he said.
Looking beyond the noise
What Lewis has in mind, however, are the practical realities of facing an undefeated heavyweight who possesses wrestling pedigree and youthful energy.“Yeah, anything can happen. It’s a heavyweight match. I think maybe wrestling, or trying to run the whole time. That’s really what it’s about.We have set up a good camp. We have worked on everything. I’m going to go out there and do what I always do. I don’t think much. Once the cage is closed, we will see what happens,” he added. Where does this fight fit?Lewis understands that beating an undefeated prospect with only three UFC fights won’t dramatically change his standing. They believe the rankings will stay where they are.“That would probably put me in the same spot because beating this guy wouldn’t do anything for me. He only has three fights in the UFC, so beating him wouldn’t really do anything for me.“But that’s fine. I’m just focused on doing well. That’s always been the goal,” he said.But the White House assignment is bigger than ratings or records. Lewis doesn’t believe a win over Hockett will rewrite the heavyweight rankings, but he acknowledges the rarity of the moment.
Years after becoming the UFC’s knockout king, years after title shots have come and gone, Lewis finds himself with something every fighter chases – another unforgettable streak.“I’m an entertaining fighter. People know I go out there and give it my all every time.
