Honey Singh how bipolar disorder took over his life
Recently on the ABTalks podcast, Honey said, “I was Yo Yo Honey Singh, India’s biggest superstar at the time. But then I developed symptoms of bipolar disorder. If I look back seven to 10 years ago, I was locked in my room, without talking or meeting anyone, away from the internet, away from radio, TV and any information from the media. I didn’t even speak. I didn’t know I was getting it. He was controlling me. Bipolar disorder is such a big disease that no one can explain it in words. It starts with suspicion of everything, fear of death and fear of people”.
Honey Singh asks God for death and to find purpose in life
Before his transformation, Honey Singh had no place for faith in his life, by his own admission, he was a staunch atheist. His family, trying to see him heal, kept pushing him towards spirituality, but he refused to listen. His mother prayed at home, hoping it would bring some peace, but she remained unmoved. Then came a moment that changed everything. “I thought I was the one who made Yo Yo Honey Singh. I was the one who did everything,” Singh said. “I still remember the day I changed…the night I changed, not the day. So the moment came when I said to God, “I’m sorry, I disrespected you.” I didn’t believe in you. Now, no matter how you look at it, I’m going to start respecting you because I want something from you.” That was death. Because I couldn’t control what was happening inside me. I was done with myself. That night, I asked for death,” Singh confessed, adding, “I didn’t get death.” I have a purpose to live.”
How Honey Singh was given a second chance at life by a new doctor and faith
It was only in 2022 that Singh understood the significance of that defining night in 2019 when he surrendered to a higher power. Looking back, he could see how much it had changed the course of his life. “I lost hope, so I wondered how I was getting better. I got a new doctor, he changed my medication. Since then, he has really been an angel in my life,” the singer said. Her doctor, she says, encouraged her to face her past, both the painful and the happy parts of it. “He suggested me to re-examine my bad and good memories, now that I was getting better, to fix myself. Then I revisited that episode. That night, I believed in him and asked for his forgiveness. That’s why he’s giving me a second chance,” Singh added. For the rapper, turning to faith became a real turning point. “When I became a believer, my life changed. Now, God is giving me everything I have and deserve in life. What I’m doing is a new opportunity for me, because I was finished. Not everyone gets a second birth. That’s it, just him,” Singh confirmed, adding, “I’m still a patient with bipolar disorder. But God has been kind. I’m traveling the world, doing shows and making music again. It’s a miracle.”
How Honey Singh 3.0 marked the rapper’s triumphant return
Although Honey Singh stopped making music for Hindi films, it was his 2024 album ‘Honey Singh 3.0’ that really marked his comeback. The momentum only grew from there, and two more hit albums followed in quick succession, ‘Glory’ in 2024 and ’51 Glorious Days’ last year. He also made a triumphant return to the world stage with the My Story World Tour, which he brought to India earlier this year with a packed and memorable concert in New Delhi.
