'Shah Rukh ne raada kar diya': Former ACP says Shah Rukh Khan's 2012 Wankhede clash

Shah Rukh KhanThe 2012 clash at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium – one of the most controversial off-field moments in the Indian Premier League – has been revived, with former Assistant Commissioner of Police Iqbal Shaikh calling it a case of “miscommunication” that had spiraled out of control.Recounting the high-tension night, Shaikh revealed that he was on duty when the situation escalated shortly after the match ended following a minor disagreement between the security personnel and the cast.“It was a miscommunication between the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) officials. I was the divisional ACP of the area where the Wankhede stadium is falling, and that’s why I was there. When I reached the main gate, an MCA colleague informed me Shah Rukh ne raada kar diya (Shah Rukh Khan is creating a scene). By then, the match was over, most of the crowd had left, and some of the lights were also switched off,” he said in an interview with Subhojit Ghosh.

“The argument got heated”

What started as a routine objection soon turned into a tense snowball, with voices raised and tensions rising inside the stadium.“Shah Rukh Khan and some children were playing with him on one side. A security guard objected and blew the whistle, which angered him. There was some exchange of words, and then the MCA officials also intervened. The argument got heated, and when I came in, the atmosphere worsened,” recalls Shaikh.Feeling relieved, the officer said swift action was needed to prevent the situation from turning uglier.“I immediately escorted him from the Shah Rukh Stadium to prevent the situation from escalating further. I directly told him, ‘Sir, please get out’. Otherwise, things could have unnecessarily worsened.”

What exactly happened that night at Wankhede

The bright spot came after Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Mumbai Indians, but the post-match drama quickly overshadowed the on-field result. Footage of an agitated Shah Rukh Khan arguing with security personnel went viral, fueling allegations of misconduct by MCA officials and leading to a police complaint.Shah Rukh, however, has consistently denied it, stating that he reacted after the children — including his own — were allegedly mishandled. He later admitted that he had lost his temper, referring to a remark he found offensive in front of his children. The decision was swift and severe as the Mumbai Cricket Association imposed a five-year ban on access to the Wankhede Stadium and its premises, though it was lifted after three years. Shah Rukh then made a thoughtful note, thanking MCA for his “kindness” and insisting that grace was ultimately more important than who was right or wrong.
