Director RJ Balaji has spoken about the journey of his starrer ‘Karuppu’ Suriya. He explains that the project started unexpectedly when he got a call from the makers of ‘Karuppu’ while he was working on another script. He described the second call as something that felt very special and meaningful to him, almost like a strong instinct to carry him forward. Soon after, he met Suriya and narrated the story. The actor liked the script for its strong mix of emotion, action and commercial appeal, eventually giving his full support to the film.

Talking about music, in an interview with Cinema Vikatan, RJ Balaji revealed AR Rahman at first he had to compose for the film. He shared, “After ‘Mookuthi Amman’, I met AR Rahman sir, and he asked us if we could collaborate. I was very happy and narrated the story of ‘Karuppu'”. Rahman liked the script and had several discussions with the team. However, things changed later due to personal reasons. “He told me, ‘I am not sure if I can do justice to this film now. Your shoot has also started. What can we do?” said Balaji. Despite the disappointment, the team had to go ahead with a replacement.

Sai Abhyankar strung together as the band searches for fresh musical energy

After AR Rahman’s exit, the makers quickly roped in Sai Abhyankkar as the new composer. RJ Balaji explained that the team needed the songs immediately as the shooting had started. They were impressed with Sai’s previous work and felt that his fresh style would suit the film. He also expressed confidence in the young composer, saying that just like legends like Ilaiyaraaja and later Anirudh Ravichander rose to great heights, Sai too has the potential to make it big in the industry.

RJ Balaji also spoke about the overall tone of the film, describing ‘Karuppu’ as a complete family entertainer with action, emotion, romance and social responsibility. He said that the film portrays women negatively and has a meaningful message. Also, the film reunites Suriya and Trisha after a long time. According to the director, the film will bring back Suriya’s energetic and emotional screen presence, giving fans a memorable theatrical experience.
