Indian Premier League (IPL) Franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has complained. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on the DJ’s song selection and comments during the match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 5 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, according to a report in The Indian Express. In the complaint, CSK said the track “dosa, idli, sambar, chutney, chutney” was to be played during the match. “Not in good taste.” The song is often used in memes associated with South Indian stereotypes. According to the report, CSK said the song contained references like “dosa, idli, sambar, chutney”, which the franchise felt was stereotypical and mocked their Tamil Nadu identity. The issue comes at a time when the rivalry between the two teams has intensified, with RCB winning four matches in a row against CSK. CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan told The Indian Express: “DJs are usually there to support the home team. But at the Channaswamy Stadium, it was different.”
A history of tit-for-tat with ‘dosa, idli, sambar, chutney, chutney’
The issue relates to an incident in 2025 involving RCB’s Jitesh Sharma. He was mocked by a Chennai DJ when a video of him singing the same song went viral. In a video shared before the match, the RCB players were asked what comes to mind when they think of Chennai. While most gave a general reaction, Jitesh sang, “dosa, idli, sambar, chutney chutney” which some CSK fans saw as a stereotype of South Indian culture. CSK said they have taken steps after the incident and put in place rules to ensure their staff remain impartial and respectful. “After this incident, there has been no repeat of it. DJ should not comment on opposing players. Moreover, we are fortunate to have a beautiful fan base that cheers us on in numbers,” Viswanathan said, as quoted by The Indian Express.
