The Federation of West Indian Cine Workers (FWICE) has escalated the ‘Don 3’ controversy by formally writing to major production bodies, including the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA) and the Producers Guild of India, seeking collective action against what it calls the growing trend of actors walking away from committed projects. The move comes days after the federation issued a non-cooperation directive against the actor Ranveer Singh On Farhan Akhtar’s last-minute exit from ‘Don 3’.
FWICE represents a “growing industry model”.
In a detailed letter signed by FWICE president BN Tiwari, the federation described the “Don 3” situation as part of a worrying and wider trend in the industry.According to the India Today report, the letter said, “…it wishes to register its grave concern over instances of heavy losses suffered by producers due to last-minute withdrawal or withdrawal of senior actors from committed projects without prior consultation, due notice or professional engagement with stakeholders.”The federation also warned that such departures “at advanced planning and pre-production stages” not only hurt producers financially, but also disrupt the wider production ecosystem, affecting “the livelihoods of artists, technicians and workers associated with the projects”.
FWICE calls for a joint meeting and a binding SOP
Beyond resolving the current dispute, FWICE is pushing for structural change. The federation has called for a meeting with the producer bodies to formulate a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to handle similar situations in the future. Among the proposed measures are clear protocols governing the withdrawal of agents after formal engagement, institutional mechanisms for resolving disputes, safeguards against sudden exits for financial reasons and “a binding framework for the entire industry to ensure accountability and professional discipline”.“FWICE stressed that the issue “requires collective deliberation and constructive intervention by all producer bodies so that an amicable and practical solution can be reached among stakeholders in the greater interest of the industry”.
FWICE asks everyone to act like a family
The federation closed its letter with a note of collective responsibility.“We, all players in the industry, are collectively part of a family and must come together to face the challenges that threaten the future ecology and economy of the industry,” added FWICE, expressing confidence that “through collective dialogue and cooperation” the issue can be resolved while building stronger prevention mechanisms for the future.
More on the ‘Don 3’ case
The financial stakes in the “Don 3” case have come into sharp focus, as FWICE has confirmed that the claimed losses are nearly 45 crores, and Excel Entertainment has sought compensation from Ranveer Singh. Industry chatter has intensified following reports that significant investments were made in the film’s pre-production phase before the alleged crash.
