According to the PTI report, Pakistan has been banned from showing Indian content since 2018. The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) issued a show cause notice to GeoNews on Monday. Through the ad, the authorities have sought an explanation as to why the channel aired Indian content alongside the news of Asha Bhosle’s death.

According to the report, Azhar Abbas, managing director of the news channel, posted on X, “It has always been the norm to review and praise the work of iconic artists while reporting on them. In fact, for an artiste of Asha Bhosle’s stature, we should be sharing even more of her timeless and memorable songs than we are. However, this regulator has restricted the electronic media in Pakistan, PEMRA.”The publication also noted that “Asha Bhosle herself admired the legendary Pakistani singer Noor Jahan, and fondly called her her ‘elder sister’.” He collaborated with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and gave life to the poetry of great Urdu poets like Nasir Kazmi.”He concluded his message by adding: “In times of war and conflict, art and artists should not become victims. Intellectuals, musicians and creators are often the voices that oppose hatred and division and bring people closer together.’

Reportedly, PEMRA stated that the new channel had deliberately defied the Supreme Court of Pakistan ruling, which had banned the airing of Indian content.With this, according to the notice, the chain has violated Rule 15 of 2009 of PEMRA. Regulation 18 1 (g) of the PEMRA (Operation of Television Broadcasting Stations) Regulations of 2012; and clauses 4(10), 5, 17, 20 and 24 of the Electronic Media (Programmes and Advertisements) Code of Conduct 2015.On April 27, the general manager of the chain was summoned and ordered to explain in writing within 14 days why the authorities should not initiate legal action against the chain.
