With the NEET UG 2026 exam over, students are now trying to understand which rank they can get the MBBS seat, even waiting for the answer key and results. While the exact cut-off for this year will be known only after counselling, past trends give a clear idea of where students stand. The required rank depends on several factors, including whether the student is applying under All India Quota (AIQ) or state quota, category, and the type of college whether public or private. Seats in government colleges are limited and generally closed at a much higher rank than private colleges.Under the 15 percent all-India quota, MBBS seats in top government colleges are usually closed at very high levels. In recent years, general category candidates needed ranks within a few thousand to get a seat in top colleges. For mid-tier government colleges, the final grades are higher, but still competitive.State quota counselling, which covers 85 per cent seats in government colleges, shows wider variation. Cut offs vary from state to state depending on the number of seats and level of competition. Some states with more medical colleges rank relatively higher than others.Private medical colleges offer another option, but the rank requirement is generally lower than that of government institutions. However, the fees in private colleges are quite high, which becomes an important factor for many students during counselling.Category also plays a key role in determining the cut-off. Candidates belonging to specific categories such as SC, ST and OBC often have different cut-off marks compared to the general category, as per counseling norms. With the answer key and results out now, students are advised to use this time to understand the counseling process, check past cut offs and shortlist colleges. The final picture will be clear when the official rank is declared and the counseling starts.
