In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Chitrangada said that director Aditya Kripalani was first approached to play the female lead two years ago. He had earlier worked with her in his first film, ‘Tikli And Laxmi Bomb’, but still asked her to audition. He recalled asking her, “I’ve worked with you so many times, do I still have to audition?”Chitrangada said that Aditya sent him the entire script, which helped him understand the character better. “Initially, I was excited about the film because it would give me an opportunity to work with Nawazuddin Siddiqui. But after reading the script, that reason took a back seat,” he said.The film was shot across Mumbai and Frankfurt, with Chitrangada in Mumbai and Nawazuddin in Germany. He said the two units coordinated calls to action and time zones, making the process feel like a theater.Calling Nawazuddin “an absolute genius”, he said his minimal performance inspired him to bring out the villain in his role. “I was a little clumsy. He’s been my favorite actor,” she said. “Beyond the call, I’m being mean, I’m being bullied.” He added, “I was afraid, ‘Mr Nawaz must hate me because he must think I am like this in real life too’.”

Chitrangada also spoke about casting based on social media reach. He said actors are often asked to share their Instagram profiles during auditions. “It’s true, unfortunately, if not for all projects,” he said.He criticized the practice and added, “Casting someone based on followers is a little lame because people are following you for your GRWM videos or other content like that. They’re not going to go see your show or your movie because that audience is so different.”Chitrangada said that ‘Nahin Hoon Starring’ deals with acting, human relationships, mental health and loneliness. He called the theatrical release rare for a film of this type today, comparing it to films like ‘The Lunchbox’.
