New Delhi: The ongoing IPL 2026 season has come under intense scrutiny for the alarming decline in fielding standards, with former Indian cricketer Muhammad Kaif Leading the criticism after highlighting repeated errors and poor catching in the teams.Numbers indicate concern. In the 59 matches tracked by Crackways, fielders have dropped 153 catches while completing 541, resulting in a catching efficiency of just 77.9 per cent – a sharp dip for a tournament often defined by razor-thin margins.Keef, known for his elite fielding quality during his playing days, did not hold back in his assessment of the recent performances.“It’s painful to watch fielding in this IPL. Today Yash Raj dropped KL when they were down for zero. Vibhu Suryavanshi also misfielded. The young lad has not taken a catch this season. Playing for India, he needs speed on the field. It is the duty of the coaches to teach the fielding skills to the youngsters. On their part, the boys should enjoy fielding and be proud of it,” he posted on Sunday night.‘Very bad’ execution: Parag reacts after RR debacleKaif’s comments came on a day when Rajasthan Royals Arun Jaitley collapsed again during the five-wicket defeat by Delhi Capitals at the stadium.RR captain Ryan Prag admitted that fielding lapses as well as bowling inconsistencies cost his team in a crucial match. “Very poor. You have to be better than what we did today. Very disappointing,” he said.Parag stressed that RR failed to capitalize on a strong platform and let the game slip in both performance and energy. “We were in a pretty good place after 14 overs… it should have been 220-230,” he said of his batting failures, adding that both the bowling and fielding standards were also “not up to the mark.”The RR skipper did not shy away from the responsibility either, saying that repeated poor performances in recent matches have made it imperative for the franchise to win their remaining games to stay alive in the playoff race.A widespread fielding problem in IPL 2026RR’s defeat has only added to the wider concerns raised by Kiev, with dropped catches and misfields becoming a recurring theme among teams this season. What was once considered an obvious strength of franchise cricket — sharp athletic fielding — now seems to be increasingly affected by execution errors. As the playoff race tightens, the fielding conversation has shifted from isolated mistakes to systemic concern.
