Mayte Garcia, who was once married to iconic musician Prince, recently revisited their past and opened up about their relationship. Garcia also talked about how he learned of the singer’s death, nearly a decade after his death.

Speaking to Us Weekly, Garcia reflected on her relationship with Prince. The two dated for four years before officially divorcing in 2000. They married on Valentine’s Day 1996. In the interview, he also recalled how he learned of his death, saying that he was driving when he received the news. She said: “They called me, and I don’t know how I got home. I don’t know how much I didn’t tell him. It’s something we all have to deal with, losing someone we love, but it was really hard, and I didn’t want it to be true.“Singer Raspberry Beret and Garcia first met when they were 16 years old belly dancer. After his mother gave Prince a tape of the dance, he joined the tour at age 18. While working as his assistant dancer, he eventually moved to Paisley Park, Minnesota.

In a previous interview with The Wall Street Journal, Garcia explained how their love story unfolded. “First we became friends, then we became friends. And then I unknowingly became his muse. Then we fell in love, and then we got married. It was a beautiful romance. I like to tell a fairy tale because it was so romantic and magical,” she said.What happened to PrincePrince, regarded as one of the pioneers of pop music and culture, died on April 21, 2016. He died of an accidental overdose, and found no answers in his home.
