Mumbai: Indian cricket is set for a major shake-up when the Ajit Agarkar-led national selection committee meets at the BCCI headquarters on Saturday to pick the squad for the T20I tours of Ireland and England. The biggest change is expected at the top. Shreyas Iyer will be named as India’s new T20 captain in place of Suryakumar Yadav, whose prolonged slump in form will see him lose both the captaincy and his place in the squad. Tilak Verma is expected to be named vice-captain as the selectors begin to map out India’s road map for the T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand after the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.Another major talking point is the likely maiden call-up of 15-year-old batting sensation Vibhu Suryavanshi, at least for the two-match T20I series in Ireland. IPL-2026 numbers for the Bihar opener are impossible to ignore. He finished as the tournament’s top run-scorer with 776 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 237.30, hitting a record 72 sixes. The selectors will also announce the squad for the Asian Games in Japan and India A’s multi-day tour of Sri Lanka.Tilak could lead the Asian Games team, with Suryavanshi also in contention. While Suryavanshi’s rise has been seasonal, Surya’s fortunes have gone in the opposite direction. The 35-year-old managed just 270 runs at 20.76 in IPL 2026 and continued to struggle in the T20 Mumbai League.Despite leading India to the T20 World Cup title earlier this year, his poor returns in the last 18 months have worn out the selectors’ patience. The selectors may also reward a few budding actors. Delhi pacer Prince Yadav and left-arm spinning all-rounder Harsh Dubey, both recently picked in the ODI squad against Afghanistan, are strong contenders for the first T20 call-ups.
