What really went wrong for KKR?
Here are the main reasons behind KKR’s struggle in IPL 2026:If not Alan Seifert, then who? When you have two explosive batsmen like Finn Allen And Tim Seifert In the squad, the expectation was that KKR would use them together at the top of the order. Before the season, the potential combination looked straightforward – Allen and Seifert with Rahane at No. 3 or 4. However, KKR went with an Allen-Rahane opening combination instead, a move that failed to yield consistent results.KKR also had the option of using Sunil Narine, who started the franchise’s dream as the first opener. The uncertainty surrounding the initial combination ultimately hurt the team badly.Rahane’s strike rateAs an opener, Rahane struggled to provide an explosive start. The KKR skipper scored 335 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 135.08 – failing to keep the opposition bowlers under constant pressure during the powerplay.Patherana injuryKKR spent a whopping Rs 18 crore to acquire. Mathisha Pathirana. in the IPL auction, but injuries completely derailed their campaign. The Sri Lankan fast bowler made a late addition to the squad after suffering a left calf injury during Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup campaign. After finally being cleared to play in mid-April, Pathirana ended up on the bench before finally making his debut against Gujarat Titans. However, his comeback was short-lived as he bowled just 1.2 overs before leaving the field with a hamstring injury.Mustafiz’s absence hurt KKR badlyMustafizur Rahman’s absence proved to be the biggest blow for KKR. A bowler with the ability to unsettle the batsmen, break partnerships and deliver wickets at critical moments, Mustafizur’s absence leaves a big gap in the bowling attack. KKR bought him at the auction for Rs 9.2 crore, but the franchise later released him following instructions from the BCCI due to geopolitical developments in the region. KKR lost both its wicket-taking ability and its lower-order hitting during crucial moments of the season.Varun Chakraborty.Injury concernsStar spinner Varun Chakraborty battled multiple injuries throughout the season. During the tournament, he was often seen wearing knee braces and using crutches off the field. After going wicketless in KKR’s opening three matches, Chakraborty made a strong comeback with 10 wickets in the next four matches. However, his injury struggles and the fact that he continued to bowl despite not being fully fit significantly affected KKR’s campaign.

IPL 2026: KKR’s Report Card
One of the biggest positives for KKR this season was the emergence of Batting in the middle order, the 21-year-old played several fighting knocks and often saved the team after the top-order collapsed. He also impressed behind the stumps with the gloves. Raghuvanshi became KKR’s highest run-scorer with 422 runs in 13 matches at an average of 42.20.Young pacer Karthik Tyagi also emerged as a bright spot in a tough campaign. Bought for Rs 30 lakh after going unsold in the IPL 2025 auction, Tyagi impressed with his pace and wicket-taking ability. He ended the season with 18 wickets, the third highest among Indian bowlers in the league stage.
What next for KKR?
Despite showing a strong fightback in the second half of the season, KKR’s poor start ultimately proved too damaging to overcome. For a franchise with three IPL trophies, missing out on another playoff will force the management to rethink several areas ahead of IPL 2027. The KKR think tank will have plenty to review ahead of next season – and the conversation might even start with ‘captaincy’.
