‘KD: The Devil’ story set in the underworld of the 1970s
The film is set in the early 1970s and revolves around Kaali. He is a small-time criminal underground. His life changes after he gets involved with powerful characters.
Set in the underworld of Bengaluru, the narrative explores power, politics and survival. Kaali starts off as an innocent man, but is forced to adapt.
ETimes shared their review, “Performance-wise, Dhruva Sarja leads the film with a portrayal that matches the archetypal protagonist often associated with director Prem’s cinematic style. It effectively captures Kali’s innocence and ultimate intensity, showing variations in particularly emotionally poignant sequences, while also offering moments designed for mass appeal. Ramesh Aravind, as Dharma, brings a composed and grounded presence, embodying a character rooted in values and restraint, and contributes to the narrative tension. Sanjay Dutt, who provides a formidable antagonistic presence; Shilpa Shetty, who suggests continuing with a character arc portraying Sathyavathi; V. Ravichandran, who adds considerable screen presence; Contributing to the narration are Ravishankar, Suchendra Prasad, Dattanna and Manasi Sudhir. Sudeep makes a cameo appearance as Kaala Bhairava, and despite his limited screen time, his presence is impactful, serving as a tease for a more significant role in the sequel. However, despite the breadth of the roles, the performances collectively tend towards a loud, highly dramatic style that becomes overwhelming after a point.”
The supporting cast includes Reeshma Nanaiah, Jisshu Sengupta and Nora Fatehi. The film’s music is composed by Arjun Janya.
