Former England captain Michael Vaughan has expressed concern over England’s handling. Jofra Archeravailability, over the question of whether central contracted players should be allowed to prioritize franchise commitments over Test cricket as England prepare for their home summer against New Zealand. Speaking on Cricbuzz, the former England captain highlighted Archer’s ongoing IPL involvement in India as England prepare for the first Test at Lord’s, suggesting the situation reflects a wider structural imbalance between international boards and franchise leagues. England have announced their squad for the opening Test against New Zealand starting June 4, with Jofra Archer left out as the ECB carefully manage his return to red ball cricket after a long injury lay-off. Despite being one of England’s most powerful fast bowlers and a proven performer at Lord’s, he will not feature in the series opener. Vaughan’s criticism, however, focused more on the system than the player himself. “I’m sure he’ll be in the squad (for the second Test). That comes in mid-June. I think we have a problem in English cricket at the moment because Jofra has obviously stayed for the full IPL. There’s some deal that the ECB has done. BCCI It’s allowing all our players to stay for the duration,” he said. It questioned the classification of obligations under central treaties, saying that international duties should take precedence. “If that’s the case, I have a problem with the England contracts because Jofra have been looking after them for a couple of years on a very handsome contract. So who holds the key? I believe the international contract is more than any franchise,” Vaughan added. While he acknowledged the value of franchise tournaments, Vaughan warned that Test cricket risks being undermined if priorities are not clearly defined. “Look, all these franchise leagues are fantastic. I love them for the players. But I think if we start putting the domestic leagues over and above the Test match, then I think there’s a real problem.” He also pointed to the confusion created for players when scheduling agreements overlap with international fixtures, leaving boards to balance competing priorities. “England had to make a decision because a lot of people have talked about it in the last week, right, because we feel that if you’re playing for England in your Test match, the players should come back home playing for England. This is what your central contract says you should do.“ Vaughan suggested that if England is committed to allowing full participation in the IPL, its international calendar may need to be adjusted accordingly. “If there is an agreement that the ECB has made with the BCCI, well, I think you have to start your Test summer a bit later.” From a leadership perspective, he stressed that team management will always prioritize availability of full strength for marquee matches. “If I were Rob Key, director of cricket, or Brendon McCullumCoach, I want my best bowler to play in the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s. Not here.” For Vaughan, the issue ultimately becomes a major concern about the direction of Test cricket. “We want to see our best players play Test match cricket. Those who are left, play the longest format of the game. I want to see them play for our country.” Jofra Archer is also in strong form on the franchise front. He is Rajasthan Royals‘ Top wicket takers and their top five overall wicket takers. In IPL 2026, he took 17 wickets in 12 matches at an economy rate of 9.09, continuing to make a significant impact in the league.
