By Jeethu Joseph

When ‘Drishyam’ released in 2013, it changed the course of Malayalam cinema, especially the thriller genre. the director Jeethu Joseph and protagonist Mohanlal Like Georgekutty, the thriller became a historic blockbuster and its climax was something never attempted in Mollywood. Now, 13 years after the release of the film, Jeethu Joseph has made a shocking confession. The director said that he thinks he made a mistake while writing the first part of ‘Drishyam’. He shared this in an interview published by Aashirvad Cinemas as part of the promotions of ‘Drishyam 3’.

The real story behind “Drishyam”.

Jeethu Joseph explained that the seed of Drishyam came from a real conflict between the two families. The trouble involved a boy and a girl and eventually turned into a police case.“I got the idea from a disagreement between two families. It involved a problem between a boy and a girl, which eventually became a police case. At the time, someone told me that the two families were right in some ways and wrong in others. The question was: whose side would you take?”

A thought remained with him

The filmmaker said the comment had been on his mind for years. He began to wonder how the audience would react if such a morally complex situation were presented on screen.“He knew both the families personally. This was in 2000, before he entered the film industry. I wondered if a situation like this was shown in a theatre, who would the audience support? Their minds would keep swinging between the two sides, wouldn’t they? That thought eventually became Drishyam.”

Why does Jeethu feel that Joseph was wrong

After the completion of the film, Jeethu realized that his belief was not acting the way he expected. Instead of being divided, the audience mostly supported Georgekutty and his family.“After watching the film, I realized I made a mistake because that balance didn’t happen. Everyone was adamant about Georgekutty and his family.”Jeethu Joseph also defended Geetha Prabhakar, a grieving mother searching for her missing son: “If you think about it, can we really blame Geetha Prabhakar? Her son has gone missing, and she is desperately trying to uncover the truth. From her point of view, Georgekutty is manipulating everything. How could she ever accept that her son was wrong? To believe what really happened. As a mother, she does not know the truth. That was the original spark behind Drishyam”.The ‘Drishyam’ franchise is gearing up for its next chapter. ‘Drishyam 3’ releases on May 21.
