“It had more of a narrative sense”

‘Off Campus’ has recently managed to go viral online, especially after it was revealed that Allie and Dean’s romance will be explored in the first season itself. The series is adapted from Elle Kennedy’s best-selling novels. In a recent interview, Louisa Levy, who wrote the script for the hit show, dished on the decision, along with what fans can expect from the upcoming season.

Louisa Levy talks about ‘Off Campus’ and the Allie-Dean story

Although the main focus of the first season and the book remains Hannah and Garrett, the introduction of Allie and Dean in the episode caused quite a stir online. This was because their plot has an entirely separate book based on them, and fans assumed the same would be the case for the series. While speaking to Variety about the same, Louisa commented on that, and also addressed some of the scenes where Logan and Dean switched places. “I love that scene in the books, and I’d definitely love to do the Dean version. But switching to Logan allowed us to play with his crush and protect his story, because kisses don’t necessarily support Dean’s story this season. We started Logan’s feelings in the pilot and it allowed us to dig deeper where the narrative is slower.

How Louisa Levy approached the ‘Off Campus’ books

Although the star writer was aware, he did not know that ‘Off Campus’ was completely popular. He added, “I don’t think I fully realized how popular they were – I keep discovering new things. It was really important to me to honor the fans and their favorite moments. We had eight episodes, so we did our best to bring those critical moments to the screen.”He also revealed that Brianna Kaufman, a studio executive, was a “superfan” and was the one who originally brought the book idea to the studios. Kaufman shared that he stood by her, along with another producer on the show, to make sure she didn’t stray too far from the original plot.
