Captain of Punjab Kings Shreyas Iyer Endured a rare off-day with the bat as his side suffered their first defeat of IPL 2026. Rajasthan Royals Ending a successful chase of 223 in a high-scoring contest on Tuesday. Coming into the match in strong form, Iyer never found his rhythm. He scored 30 off 27 balls, hitting just one boundary and one six, slowing down PBKS during a crucial phase of the innings. While Marcus Stoins Provided the late fireworks with an unbeaten 62 off just 22 balls, taking the total to 222 for 4, it ultimately proved insufficient. Questions have since been raised around Iyer’s approach, particularly with attacking options like Marco Johnson and Nihal Vadhira waiting in the dugout but not getting a chance to bat. The situation has given rise to debate as to whether Iyer could have considered retiring himself to speed up the innings. Former South African fast bowler Sean PollockHowever, felt that such a move would depend heavily on the betting options available. “It depends on who you want to come in. So, if Stoins had played two knocks like he did today, and he has to come in, you might consider. But I don’t think there’s anyone in the order who you think would be in better form,” Pollock told Crackbuzz. Polk also alluded to a similar situation from his time in SA20 with the Pretoria Capitals. “We had an example in our SA20. We promoted Ruston Chase but we had Rutherford who was in incredible form and was hitting over 200. Ruston had a bit of a break (of slow batting). We stretched him to two overs. Also, we wanted a left-hander at the crease,” he explained. “So, when you’ve got one, tactically if you feel as a captain, yes, I’m not hitting him today and you want to make a change,” he added, highlighting the strategy behind such calls. Veteran commentator Harsha Bhogle offered a different view, suggesting that Iyer’s recent form had influenced his decision to continue. “If you’re an in-form player, you’re always backing yourself. So he’s saying to himself yes I know but I’ll probably hit three sixes from here,” Bhogle said. Pollock added that retirement decisions are becoming more common in modern T20 cricket. “It’s a brave call, but it’s definitely happening more and more,” he said. Despite the loss, Iyer has enjoyed an impressive season so far, leading PBKS to the top of the table while ranking among the top six hitters in the tournament. Vibhu Suryavanshi added 43 off 16 balls and Yashwi Jaiswal 51 off 27 balls, providing early momentum to the chase with an opening stand of 51 runs. The game was eventually sealed by a dominant unbeaten partnership between Donovan Ferreira and Shubham Dubey. Ferreira scored 52 off 26 balls while Dubey hit a blistering 31 off just 12 balls, guiding Rajasthan home with four balls to spare.
