New Chandigarh: Shubham Dubey Most of cricket’s life is spent waiting. Waiting for recognition, for opportunity, for a moment that would demand everything he had quietly built up over the years. Tuesday night, as Rajasthan Royals Here the undefeated Punjab Kings were heading for defeat when that moment finally arrived. Dubey grabbed him with both hands.Running as an ‘Impact Substitute’ at No.6, ahead of names like Ravindra Jadeja and Dasan Shanaka, the 31-year-old Dubey was handed a situation that could easily swallow him up.With Rajasthan Royals still needing 72 off 36 balls, the chase continued to slip and the pressure mounted. But Dubey didn’t just control his nerves. It turned the game on its head.Dubey scored an unbeaten 258.33 with 31 runs off just 12 balls and added 77 runs off just 32 balls with Donovan Ferreira to win by six wickets. What looked like a weak chase turned into a statement win, ending Punjab’s unbeaten run.
Born in Yavatmal in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region, Dubey had humble beginnings. A decade ago, he did not have the means to afford basic cricket equipment. His father Badri Prasad Dubey ran a paan stall in Nagpur and the family made paan with limited resources. This breakthrough came from the faith of his mentor, the late Sudeep Jaiswal, who supported him when few others did. Jaiswal bought him his first proper cricket kit – a new bat, gloves and other essentials that would allow Dubey to compete on an equal footing. More importantly, it helped him find a way into the Vidarbha team. From there, Dubey built his reputation in the lesser-known corners of Indian cricket. Tournaments like the Bapona Cup in Vidarbha became his proving ground, where he developed into a power hitter who was able to change pace in a matter of overs. Wider recognition came during the 2023–24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Dubey scored 221 runs at an average of 73.66 and scored at an average of 187.28. This number was impossible to ignore for IPL scouts.Rajasthan Royals responded by investing Rs 5.8 crore in it ahead of IPL 2024. But the transition was not smooth. He could only score 33 runs in four games, though his strike rate of 173.68 indicated his intent. RR released him but bought him back this time for Rs 80 lakh.“Dube, coming in as an impact player, that’s one of the hardest things to do, because you don’t know if you’re playing or not. So mentally, he was exceptionally skilled. The way he was able to stay focused and go through the middle and swing the game in our favor was brilliant.” Kumar SangakkaraRajasthan Head Coach and Director of Cricket.Sangakkara pointed out that Rajasthan Royals’ strength lies in their batting depth, with Dubey firmly a part of that core. “A lot of focus is on Vaibhav (Suryavanshi). But at the same time, when I look at myself and I run with my batsmen, there is Dhruv (Jural), Yash (Yashvi Jaiswal), Ryan (Parag), Donovan Ferreira and now someone like Dubey,” Sangakkara said.
