India A currently tops the points table after a dramatic eight-run win in Dambulla. The result was built on vice-captain Rutoraj Gaekwad’s century and a disciplined effort by the bowling unit in the latter stages of the match.
Gaikwad was the standout performer in the opener, scoring 101 runs to save India A from early trouble. Skipper Tilak Verma also played a crucial role with a patient 60 as the pair put on a 150-run partnership. His experience proved crucial as India slumped to 16/2 inside the first five overs.
The upcoming game will once again focus on Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The teenage batsman made his India A ODI debut against Sri Lanka A and showcased his talent during an innings of 14 runs. He hit three fours and looked confident before collapsing on the attacking shot. With the pressure of the debut now behind him, India will be hoping for a big contribution from the youngster.
India A’s bowling attack also has positive effects. Spinners Ayush Baduni and Anukul Roy picked up two wickets each and slowed down Sri Lanka’s progress in the middle overs. Pacers Arshad Khan and Anshul Kamboj then delivered at key moments as Sri Lanka A looked set for victory but fell dramatically.
Afghanistan A entered the tournament with a new squad and without the fatigue of the previous match. India A, however, will take confidence from their early win and the knowledge that they have already adapted to the conditions in Dambulla.
A second straight win would put India A in a strong position in the competition and move closer to a place in the finals. With several players hoping to impress the selectors, the clash promises to be another crucial test for this talented young side.
