In an honest conversation Shekhar SumanOn Shekhar Tonite’s YouTube show, Ali opened up about the unexpected twists and turns that surrounded their interfaith wedding. “When we decided to get married, the COVID started spreading. For a court marriage, it has to be registered a month in advance, and the announcement is made public. A journalist got it, and reports about our wedding started spreading,” he said. Alie revealed that the couple put a lot of thought into choosing a date that would allow their families to be there for the special occasion. But before the ceremony, an unexpected phone call from the judge changed everything.“The court informed us that the next day the blockade would start and everything would be closed. They told us: “If you want to get married, do it now”. We were thrown out completely. Our witnesses lived far away, and we tried to organize everything at the last minute”, he recalled.

From local loans to a last-minute curta

In a rather amusing turn of events, the couple had to quickly gather what was available at the time. A friend, who was on a date with his girlfriend, was called along with him to be a witness. He urgently contacted another friend and was asked to bring a camera. To add to the chaos, Ali had nothing suitable to wear for the occasion, leaving it to her assistant to arrange something at the last minute. “My assistant felt bad because I didn’t have anything suitable to wear. She somehow managed to make a kurta, and that’s how we got married,” Ali laughed.

From personal loss to a grand celebration across three cities

The couple originally planned to continue their quiet court wedding with a proper celebration, but fate had other plans. A deep personal loss forced them to stop everything when Ali lost his mother. “We were planning a simple wedding ceremony in April or May with my mom in attendance. Unfortunately, she passed away, and those plans had to be postponed. We ended up pushing everything by a year,” he shared. Finally, the two got to celebrate their love in a big way in 2022 with a grand wedding spread across Delhi, Lucknow and Mumbai, filled with joy, festivities and the presence of family, friends and colleagues from the film industry. Opening up about her feelings for Richa, Ali reflected hard on how their bond grew over the years. “I was a fan of his before I became his friend. I followed a democratic way of entering into relationships, and I cherish that journey,” he said.
